What is Alpha?

Alpha is an eleven week course looking at the basics of the Christian faith.  Some of the topics we look at are:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • How can I be sure about my faith?
  • How does God guide us?
  • How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
  • Does God heal today?
  • How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for anyone!  People of all ages from teenagers upwards have attended.  It particularly caters for:

  • Those wanting to explore the meaning of life
  • People investigating Christianity
  • New Christians or newcomers to the church
  • Those who feel they never really got going as a Christian.

When and Where is it?

  • Evening Alpha: usually held on Thursday evenings, with a meal at 7.30pm (finishing c.9.30pm).
  • Daytime Alpha: we can run a day time course if there is enough demand; Friday lunchtimes.
  • The Alpha Supper: Prior to each course, we hold an Alpha Supper in a local restaurant, where there is an opportunity to ask questions and see if Alpha is for you. This is for anyone interested in the course and will include an after-dinner speech introducing Alpha after a multiple course meal.  Attending the meal does not commit you to taking the course, but we do ask that you book in for the supper.

What's involved in Alpha?

Each meeting starts with a cooked meal and drinks.  Then there is a talk followed by a time of discussion which provides an opportunity to chat and ask questions for those who want to.  Those who don't want to dash off usually then have another drink and stay for more chat!  Great friendships are often made through the course

Also during the course we have a day away to consider the work and person of the Holy Spirit.  For most people this has been the highlight of the course.

There is no charge for Alpha although contributions towards food and expenses are accepted. Also the course is entirely voluntary so there is no compulsion to stay on once it has started.
